A mother-bear, who was with her two calves, attacked two persons, including a 19-year-old girl, at a tea estate last night. The injured were admitted to the Coonoor Government Hospital.
The injured, Manivel and Margaret Zaneena, were passengers of a bus. They were on their way home through the estate, at around in Runnimedu around 9 PM when the bear and her calves appeared and attacked Margaret.
Hearing her screams, Manivel tried to rescue her, but he too was injured by the bear. Meanwhile, other passengers arrived and managed to scare the animals away. They then rushed the injured persons to the hospital. Margaret had suffered serious injuries on her leg, while Manivel sustained minor injuries.
Forest officials were informed. They promised to take action and placed cages to trap the bears.
