Coimbatore Doctor R. Balamurugan Honoured with IMA’s Best Public Service Medical Award

COIMBATORE, July 7, 2025: Dr. R. Balamurugan, noted diabetologist and Joint Secretary of the Coimbatore branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), was conferred with the Best Public Service Medical Award by the Tamil Nadu State Branch of the IMA in recognition of his extensive service in diabetes awareness and care.

The award was presented during the Doctor’s Day Celebrations and State-Level Award Function held yesterday (July 6) at the IMA Headquarters in Tambaram, Chennai. The event was presided over by Dr. Senguttuvan, State President of IMA Tamil Nadu. Dr. Rajamoorthy, Director of Rural Medical Services, attended as the chief guest and delivered a special address.

Dr. Karthik Prabhu, State Secretary, and Dr. Abul Hassan, Marasirithar, were also present during the felicitation.

Dr. Balamurugan, who serves as the Chairman of the IMA State Diabetes Awareness Committee, has conducted over 1,000 free diabetes awareness and screening camps in Coimbatore and neighbouring regions. Acknowledging his consistent outreach and public health commitment, the IMA honoured him with the public service award. Over 200 doctors from across the state participated in the ceremony.

Furthering his commitment to medical education and public health, Dr. Balamurugan will play a leading role in an upcoming national seminar on diabetes, scheduled to be held at Le Meridien Hotel, Coimbatore, on August 9 and 10. Organised under the aegis of the Diabetes Awareness Committee, the seminar will feature over 100 medical professionals, including senior professors and young doctors, presenting papers on advanced and emerging issues in diabetes care. Dr. Balamurugan will present a key research paper during the seminar.
