Coimbatore, June 26, 2026 : The Nehru Institute of Engineering and Technology, located at Thirumalayampalayam on the Coimbatore–Palakkad Road, organized a Drug Awareness Programme on June 25, 2026, in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Police to promote a drug-free society and create awareness among students.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by the Principal, Dr. Maniyarasan. Dr. P. Krishnakumar, CEO and Secretary of the Nehru Group of Institutions, presided over the function and addressed the gathering.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Swaminathan, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Coimbatore Range, highlighted that the world today looks towards India with great expectations, and educational institutions play a vital role in enabling young people to showcase their talents globally.
He expressed concern over the growing drug culture among youth and stated that both the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Government of India have been taking several initiatives to eliminate drug abuse through strict enforcement and continuous awareness campaigns.
Addressing the students, he advised those residing in hostels or rented accommodations to remain vigilant, as new acquaintances could sometimes lead them towards substance abuse. He urged students to protect not only themselves but also their friends from such harmful influences.
He encouraged every student to take a firm pledge: “I will neither use drugs nor allow others to use them.” He emphasized that drug addiction can destroy an individual’s future and shatter the dreams of their parents. He further requested students to immediately inform the police, either directly or through the police mobile application, if they become aware of anyone using or supplying drugs. He assured the audience that the identity of informants would be kept strictly confidential.
Mr. Swaminathan also stressed the importance of maintaining discipline, self-control, and responsible behaviour throughout the four years of college life.
As part of the programme, the DIG administered the Anti-Drug Awareness Pledge, which was solemnly repeated by all the participants. The dignitaries, faculty members, and students also signed an Anti-Drug Awareness Banner, reaffirming their commitment towards building a drug-free society.
