The Election Commission (EC) has so far received over two lakh complaints in connection with the violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). This, considering the fact that it was imposed only a couple of weeks ago.
The EC has from its side filed more than 800 cases related to the MCC violation. As of Tuesday, in Tamil Nadu alone, cash seized amounted to Rs. 11 crore. The Commission also seized gift articles, including jewellery worth Rs. 20 lakh. Several hundred cases of liquor have also been seized.
Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni said more than Rs 48.25 lakh was seized on from Monday till Tuesday morning alone. The highest single seizure so far was Rs. 1 crore. The money was seized from a person travelling in a car in the Nilgiris.
According to him, a total amount of Rs. 11.60 crore had been seized, with the flying squad accounting for Rs 5.15 crore, and the Static Surveillance Team (SST) securing Rs. 6.43 crore so far.
In addition to these teams, CCTVs have also been installed at nearly 38,000 places in the State to check the violation of MCC.
All the money, which was seized by the EC, was deposited in the Treasury. Mr. Lakhoni also said nearly 1,500 flying squad personnel have been posted at various check points across the State to check malpractices during election.
