Eco-friendly cotton bags slowly spacing out plastic ones in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Keeping with the changing trend and shift towards eco-friendly products, Coimbatore-based Shree Sakthi Tex is into manufacture of eco-friendly cotton fabric, producing cotton bags as an alternative for plastic ones.

The company at Peelamedu has introduced a special eco-friendly bag which has six pouches meant to carry different grocery items. It also manufactured bags for saplings to replace plastic growbags.

Cotton bags with customised size, design and shape would be perfect to people with social awareness. With the ban announced for plastic products in Tamil Nadu from January, these cotton bags would be a perfect alternative for plastic ones.

S Siva Shankar, who graduated in mechanical engineering and has an MBA in finance, started producing these cotton bags aimed at replacing plastic ones way back in 2011. In an innovative way, he started producing bags to meet customer preferences of size, shape and colour. Initially, there was no demand for cotton bags as people opted for the cheaper plastic ones.

“We have been producing bags (big shopper) for private textile shops in the city. Recently, people around the city started approaching us for bags as they are aware of the environment threat plastic ones pose. Also, there is a shift to traditional products Sankar’s wife Divya.

Sankar told The Covai Post: “I was working as a mechanical engineer in a private concern for five years. Then I started this business with an idea of making eco-friendly bags and planned to make bags innovative. At first, it was Soundarajan sir, chairman of Codissia book fair, who offered me a stall to exhibit my products. The response was huge. That encouraged me to do business further in an innovative way.

“I then started producing bags in innovative way. Return gift bags, shopping bags, big shoppers, bags with hand block printings and customised ones. Bringing in more innovation, we planned grocery bags with the pouches which is literally being grabbed many customers.”

Sivasankar gives credits his employee (Baby), who has been helping him from the time he started. The company is active in social sites under the name Shree Sakthi Tex.
