In a major step towards redefining surgical care in India, GEM Hospital has unveiled ‘Operation Infinity’, the country’s first interconnected dual-city robotic surgery network, linking its centres in Coimbatore and Chennai. The initiative enables surgeons at both locations to collaborate in real time during complex robotic procedures, bringing advanced surgical expertise closer to patients regardless of geography.

The network integrates robotic surgical consoles through high-speed connectivity, allowing surgeons to share live operative views, provide remote guidance and jointly perform technically demanding surgeries. Hospital officials said the platform has been designed to improve precision, enhance patient safety and expand access to specialist care, particularly for patients in regional centres.

At the heart of the new system is an AI-enabled robotic platform that supports pre-operative planning, real-time identification of cancerous tissue, intra-operative navigation, risk assessment and prediction of potential complications. The technology is expected to help surgeons make faster and more informed decisions during critical procedures while reducing surgical risks.

The interconnected network also opens new possibilities for emergency surgical support and tele-mentoring, enabling experienced surgeons to guide teams operating from another city. GEM Hospital believes the initiative will significantly strengthen surgical training by allowing young surgeons to observe and learn from complex procedures performed across multiple centres.

Launching the initiative, Dr. C. Palanivelu, Chairman of GEM Hospital, described the project as a milestone in the evolution of Indian healthcare.

“By harnessing cutting-edge robotics, high-speed connectivity and AI-driven surgical platforms, we are transforming healthcare delivery and improving patient outcomes. This network brings the master surgeon’s expertise directly to the patient, irrespective of geographical boundaries. We are building a future where world-class surgical care is decentralised,” he said.

Dr.P.Praveen Raj,Chief Executive Officer and Joint Managing Director of GEM Hospital, said the initiative represents a new era in robotic surgery.

“Geographical boundaries are no longer relevant in modern healthcare. Beyond improving surgical precision and patient safety, this platform creates immense opportunities for collaborative learning and surgical education. By connecting our Chennai and Coimbatore centres, we can deliver consistent quality while managing highly complex procedures with greater confidence,” he said.

To demonstrate the capabilities of the new network, GEM Hospital performed a robotic Whipple procedure for pancreatic cancer. During the surgery, Dr.C. Palanivelu carried out the tumour resection while Dr. Senthilnathan completed the reconstruction. The hospital also showcased a robotic excision of a choledochal cyst, with surgical teams operating simultaneously from Coimbatore and Chennai, highlighting seamless collaboration between the two centres.

Healthcare experts say such interconnected robotic platforms could play a significant role in bridging the gap between metropolitan centres and patients in smaller cities, reducing the need for travel while ensuring access to highly specialised surgical expertise.

With Operation Infinity, GEM Hospital has positioned itself at the forefront of robotic surgery in India, demonstrating how artificial intelligence, robotics and digital connectivity can reshape the future of complex surgical care.
