“If you are struggling to get compensation for floods, TASMAC quarter and biryani can get it for you. If you have lost a goat, 2 kilos of meat can do wonders!”, screams posters in Andipatti village accusing an allegedly corrupt VAO of refusing to dispense with funds unless he is `duly gratified’.

In a fresh series of controversies over the distribution of flood relief funds, posters have mushroomed in Karumbur near Andipatti alleging that the money earmarked as compensation has not been given to the victims in Cuddalore.

Unidentified persons have accused the Village Administrative Officer Venkatachalam of not providing relief funds in time to the victims of the flood that has devastated several areas rendering several homeless. Sources in the village claim that the posters have been put up by persons who have not received the funds.

Sakthivel, one of the residents of the area, said that the government officials are distributing the funds after studying the effects of the floods in the village. “However, some persons who have not been affected by the floods were also demanding money from the government. This has created confusion for the revenue officials and hence there has been a delay in submitting the data. This in turn has delayed release of funds,” he explained.

He further added that the posters were put up by the persons who were creating trouble for the revenue department officials. Meanwhile, police sources said that the confusions arose because the VAO who is also a retired military official does not respond or return calls after evening hours, because he is usually in an inebriated state.

“People are put off due to the delay and have been constantly complaining”, the official said. Meanwhile, VAO Venkatachalam whose contact number has been put up on the posters was not available for comments.
