Happy Streets celebrates its 25th week today. As part of the celebrations Happy Streets joins hands with Swachh Bharat and Coimbatore Vizha. Members and volunteers of city based NGO Coimbatore 4 Tamil Nadu (C4TN) came together and implemented a cleanliness drive.

Recently, Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Dr Vijay Karthikeyan nominated 44 people as ambassadors of Swachh Bharat mission. And, these ambassadors have already started working on various projects. As part of the cleanliness initiative members and volunteers of C4TN and Swachh Bharat ambassadors of Coimbatore city were engaged in removing the illegal sign boards and advertisements and nails from trees on the roads along the Happy Streets corridor.

“About 40 core members of C4TN are involved in this mission. Our team has managed to remove more than 1,000 nails from the tress on T.V. Swamy Road West and D.B. Road. We have also removed more than 200 advertisements that have been put up in places that they are not supposed to be,” Arun J.D., one of the core members of C4TN, said.

Corporation Commissioner Dr. Vijay Karthikeyan was present throughout the event this morning. “It is a matter of pride that Happy Streets initiative has received the government award for the best non-vehicle initiative. It is very encouraging that other cities have followed the footsteps of Coimbatore city and have launched this concept in their respective cities. Happy Streets is a successful movement because of you people who have and are continuing to participate in this initiative,” he said.

Coimbatore city has also been selected as one of Smart Cities. This was made official recently by the Prime Minister. We asked Dr Vijay if all these recognition were due to the fact that the city has one of the youngest Corporation Commissioners in the country. “It is all teamwork and the efforts of several individuals.” Dr. Vijay said.
