On the occasion of World Cancer Day (February 4), the Coimbatore city-based multi-speciality hospital, Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) initiated their signature campaign in the morning to unite people to fight against cancer. The event was organized at the Coimbatore Junction railway station as a part of the eighth edition of the Coimbatore Vizha celebrations.

There is a steep increase in the number of people losing their lives to cancer. Awareness about the disease and early diagnosis can certainly bring down the number of deaths.

The signature campaign was launched by Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Commissioner, Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan. “This signature campaign is a great initiative by KMCH to spread awareness about the symptoms causes and treatment of cancer,” Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan, a doctor himself, said after inaugurating the campaign. ‘Let us join hands in the fight against cancer,’ was his written message.

Speaking to Covai Post, Dr Nalla G Palanisami, Chairman, KMCH, said that development in science and technology can help in the fight against cancer. “These days, we have machinery and equipment to diagnose cancer. Research and development in the field of cancer and the introduction of new drugs have brought down the deaths due to cancer. However, early diagnosis of this disease can result in effectively treating it,” he said.

Inspector of Police, B. Manikandan also participated in this signature campaign to show his support in fighting this disease.

At the campaign venue, representatives of the KMCH distributed pamphlets to spread awareness about the symptoms of cancer, including abnormal swelling, voice change, difficulty in swallowing, non-healing mouth ulcers, chronic cough, painless lumps in the breast, undue bleeding, unhealthy white discharge, frequent urination, blood in the urine, blood in stools, chronic constipation, poor appetite, sudden weight loss, and fatigue.
