S.P. Velumani, the Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, visited the rain-hit places in the south zone of Coimbatore city corporation on Wednesday and asked the corporation officials to quicken the flood relief works.

Visiting the Kallapuram housing unit near Selvapuram, Velumani directed the corporation officials to construct high-level storm drainage facility to avoid rain waters from entering residential areas.

He further instructed the officials to clear the silt and encroachments in the canal near Thippu Nagar that takes water to the Ukkadam Big Tank. Since the canal is blocked, rain water enters the nearby residential areas. The minister also requested the public to cooperate with the corporation in clearing the encroachments. He also instructed the officials to release funds to the rain-affected people under the Basic Services to Urban Poor (BSUP) Fund in Anna Colony.

Coimbatore Corporation Mayor P. Rajkumar, Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan, and District Collector Archana Patnaik were also present during the inspection.
