Namma Kovai, the Coimbatore-focussed Whatsapp group had recently helped the police arrest a rash driver who went about speeding along an overcrowded road.

A private bus with number plate TN 39 BD 9266 was overspeeding on the busy Avanashi Road. On the same stretch, one of the onlookers captured an image of the bus while it failed to stop as one of the signals turned red. Through the Whatsapp group, Namma Kovai, that has 151 members, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Dr. R. Sivakumar was alerted of this. He was quick to respond. He instructed his department to trace down the bus driver and action was taken against him.

“I’m part of the Whatsapp group Namma Kovai. This is a group of a few like-minded people. The photograph of the bus, with its number plate, was enough proof that it was violating traffic rules. We traced down the driver and a fine was imposed on him. On the same Whatsapp group, we shared the receipt of the fine that was collected for the offence,” Dr. R Sivakumar says.

Thanks to the Namma Kovai Whatsapp group, Dr. Sivakumar is all set to become blood donor too. A request for AB+ blood was made on group this evening. Within minutes of receiving the request on the group, Dr. Sivakumar volunteered to make the donation.

“I’m waiting for someone from the patient’s family to let me know the time when I must visit the hospital to donate my blood,” Dr. Sivakumar shares with us.
