Thanjavur: A notorious rowdy was hacked to death by an unidentified gang near Kumbakonam today, allegedly due to previous enmity.

Madhan alias Madhan Chakraborthy, 35, a notorious rowdy and resident of Maruthanallur area, was driving on the Sakkottai-Ayyavadi road on the Nattar river bank this morning when the armed gang intercepted his car and continually hacked him. Madha, who sustained multiple cuts, died on the spot.

On being informed, Nachiarkoil police rushed there, retrieved his body and sent it to the government hospital in Kumbakonam for postmortem. Police has registered a case and further investigation is on.

Madhan has 21 cases on various charges, including murder, kidnapping, attempted murder and intimidation registered in various police stations under Kumbakonam and Thiruvidaimarudur sub divisions, and was also imprisoned for one year in the Trichy Central Prison after he was detained under the Goondas Act in 1999. His name was in the rowdy list of Nachiarkoil police station.

His younger brother, Mithun Chakraborthy, also a notorious rowdy, was killed in an encounter with police near Kodiamman temple in Thanjavur in 2008.
