Coimbatore : As part of its drive to retrieve encroached lands, Coimbatore City Corporation on Thursday razed to the ground nearly 100 houses and shops constructed in its land in Masjid Colony in Ukkadam, the heart of the city.
The corporation had sent notices to the occupants and also provided alternative houses to them.
However, they refused to leave the place, claiming that their families had been residing for generations in the area and shifting would affect their livelihood and education of their children.
The officials, along with a posse of police, demolished the houses with the help of earth movers, even as the occupants remained mute spectators, leaving many weeping.
