Members of the Popular Front of India have demanded that life convicts in the prisons in Tamil Nadu who have served more than ten years should be released on humanitarian grounds.
Passing resolutions in this regard, the members of the organisation staged an agitation near the south taluk office on Wednesday.
Leading the agitation, M. Mohammed Ismail, the State President, said that there were many lifetime convicts in the prisons all over the state, of which 49 were Muslims.
“We have been requesting for long to release life convicts who have spent more than ten years in prison. It is common for prisoners to be released on the birthdays of leaders in the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It should also be followed in Tamil Nadu too,” he said.
