Coimbatore : Police, who arrested an ex-convict in the 1998 serial bomb blasts for his remarks of a plot to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi, are probing whether there existed a conspiracy. The ex-convict said this during a conversation with a transport contractor.

As the conversation between Mohammed Rafiq of Kuniyamuthur in the city and Prakash of Salem was confined to financial dealings and vehicles, Rafiq suddenly changed his tone, after the latter referred the name of Modi and had said, “We have planned to kill even Modi.”

On getting information about the recorded telephonic conversation going viral, police arrested Rafiq last night and remanded him in custody, after registering a case under 506 (i) of IPC (criminal intimidation).

Though the matter appeared to be serious with the name of the Prime Minister being involved, police during the preliminary inquiry with Rafiq, found the remarks were just to scare Prakash and could not be a plot against Modi, police said..

However the investigations would continue to find whether there was any plot against the Prime Minister, they said.
