People in Madhampatti are up in arms against the TASMAC outlet near Siruvani Main Road. It was mostly women, backed by various political parties, who participated in the protest.

Residents allege that alcoholism was on the rise and menfolk even pawned ornaments for drinking. This made women come in large numbers for the protest.

No action was taken on a petition they had filed at the Collector office 25 days ago, they said. This led them to protest that had the participation of children and old people. Despite police request to end the protest, they said it would go on till the closure of the outlet.

Police had taken steps to prevent vandalism.

Local BJP youth wing leader V Prasanth said practically all political parties, excluding the AIADMK and DMK, are part of the protest.

There was the menace of drug peddling in the area, MTMK member Prakash S said and sought immediate action.
