In his Award address to the graduating students, Mr.Mayekar appreciated his being invited to this Award Ceremony – his first such event after five years at Coimbatore. During his address, he provided various tips for graduating Diploma students to be successful when they join Industry and begin building their careers. The points mentioned by him were a flashback to his own career spanning 35 years at Larsen & Toubro followed by Schneider.

● Learn as much as possible – as he did when he joined L&T – exposed to all manufacturing processes and machines.

● Ask hundreds of questions and learn as much as possible in order to build your own brand image, thus enhancing the brand of your company. Companies observe this for the first few years and this will help you climb the corporate ladder. Always plan to be in the top talent group of your company.

● Learn the basics of correct communication – especially the correct form of emails since they can be forwarded to any level within the company. Write meaningfully, else the meaning would get distorted.

● The academic-industry gap is a reality, and try to bridge it as early as possible, so that you meet industry expectations. Experts in the field are already present – as a trainee, look for every opportunity to learn from them.

● Even small improvements can make a big difference – young minds work differently – use this to your advantage in finding out small improvements. Even in a product developed by his team over 35 years back, they were able to cut cost by 5% every year, thus countering inflationary trends.

● Learn current software and productivity enhancement tools – technical (like ERP) as well as basic like MS Office – Excel, Powerpoint, Word.

● If you accomplish all of these, you will be in a position to build your own brand like Sony and Sachin Tendulkar did in their fields.

● Show flexibility – after a few years, the Chief Guest mentioned moving to a new role of Head of Design from New Product Development. This flexible approach helps acquisition of knowledge across various fields, even if it means working out of your comfort zone.

● Be prepared to take on as much responsibility as possible without getting overloaded – convert Hard Work into Smart Work.
● Always be customer-centric throughout your life.

● Strike the right balance between work and family values and duties, like taking care of parents and family.

● Start investing for your future, even if it is a small amount to begin with.

The Chief Guest concluded his address with the final piece of advice to students – enjoy all that you do at work and in life – stay healthy – a healthy mind in a healthy body can work wonders for you.
