Mayor P. Rajkumar, in a meeting on Saturday, announced that the works for a railway station at Thudialur would begin soon. The station would come up with a budget of Rs. 1 crore.
Thudialur is a strategic point between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam rail route. Periyanaickenpalayam and Karamadai are the two stops between Thudialur and Mettupalayam. There used to be a station in Thudialur in 1983 and trains used to stop there. But it had gone disused. There have been requests from the public and officials to revive the station and improve the infrastructure. But nothing had been done till now.
The Corporation and Railways have joined hands to start the work on developing a new station at Thudialur. According to Venkata Subramanian B., Assistant Commercial Manager, Salem Division Railway, “There are around 20 colleges and many IT companies in this area. We expect around 5,000 to 6,000 passengers travelling from Coimbatore and other places to use the station. So, four or five important trains passing through Thudialur, will stop at the railway station for a minute. It will take around six months to finish the construction works. The budget is approximately Rs. 1 crore. We have joined hands with Corporation. This scheme is named “Siramdhan Scheme”. Corporation has contributed Rs. 44,428 to kick start the work”.
