Rape convict commits suicide on Coimbatore jail premises

Coimbatore : A 47-year man, convict in a case of raping a minor girl and lodged in the central jail here, committed suicide today by hanging from a ceiling fan in the prison.
Srinivasan of Rangasamudram near Sathyaangalam in Erode district, was sentenced to undergo seven years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl in the area a few months ago.

Srinivasan was working on the jail premises when he ran away suddenly and hung himself from the ceiling fan on the verandah using a towel he was carrying, police said.
As other prisoners raised alarm, jail officials rushed to the spot and brought Srinivasan down and sent to the Government Hospital. However, he died on the way, police said.
The body was sent for post mortem and investigations on to ascertain the reason for this extreme step.
