Protesting the attack on their Working President, M K Stalin, DMK activists today squatted on roads across the district, blocking vehicular traffic, even as stones were pelted at the office of the Assembly Speaker, Dhanpal, in Avanashi in nearby Tirupur district.
Hundreds of workers, led by former Minister, Pongalur N Palanisamy, sat across the road in front of the District Collectorate to air their protest against the attack on Stalin, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.
They raised slogans against the Speaker and the Government, which won the trust vote in an undemocratic way, police said.
Meanwhile, some miscreants pelted stones at the officer of Dhanpal at Avanashi, from where he was elected as MLA, police said.
Former Union Minister A Raja led the protest in Mettupalayam and workers there attempted to burn an effigy of Dhanpal.
Similar protests were held at more than 10 places in and around the city and Pollachi, Kinathukadavu, Valparai in the rural limits and also in some places in Tirupur district, they said.
All the workers and leaders, numbering over 2,000, were arrested, they said.
Anticipating trouble, some shopkeepers downed their shutters.
