Coimbatore : A section of people belonging to Scheduled Caste community Monday sought the intervention of the district administration to immediately step in and prevent the construction of what they claimed as ‘untouchability wall’ in their area in view of a temple festival.

In their petition to the District Collector K Rajamani, they, led by a few activists of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, said that nearly 50 SC families were residing in K Vadamadurai coming under Kurudampalayam on the outskirts, where an old Vriddheeswar temple is also existing.

As the annual festival in the temple is scheduled on July 11, the temple authorities are involved in constructing a seven feet tall and 300 feet long wall between the residential area and public road, which is considered as ‘untouchability wall,’ the petition said.

The administration should immediately take steps and stop the construction of the wall, which is raised as part of untouchability, they said.
