She is working at Odense University Hospital in Denmark (similar to house surgeon in India), after completing her Biomedical Science at Bond University, Gold Coast in Australia.

But for Sowmya Ramachandran, playing the veena and violin has been a passion since childhood.

Sowmya, a resident of Saibaba Colony, who was on a vacation here, shared her experience with Covai Post about her academics and extra-curricular activities at Bond University.

Sowmya won the State first in the instrument playing competition conducted by the Tamil Nadu Government’s Education Department, thrice over. She had won the State award in all the three categories – sub juniors, juniors and seniors – in playing the veena in 2007, 2009 and 2011 respectively, besides the plethora of concerts at All India Radio and Doordarshan.

“Even while doing my studies at Bond University, I was keen to learn violin and piano. Since there was not much strain to learn violin as it was also a string instrument, I started to perform before a big crowd at the University for the B-music exams,” she said adding that she is also fine-tuning her skills on yet another instrument – the piano – exclusively in western style.

Meanwhile, Sowmya’s father Chartered Accountant N. R. Ramachandran said that she was ranked third across the globe at the International Entrance Test for Aptitude (IETA) and added that she was one among the five from Asia to be selected for the abroad study at Bond University in Australia.

Besides her studies, Sowmya is actively involved in sports and music activities besides displaying her talent in acting in seven stage plays of which she acted in a play where they raised $12,300 to help cancer patients. She is now the Features Editor for Bond Scope magazine besides a student ambassador for Bond to win gold medal for outstanding community service.

As for her ambition, the bubbly Sowmya Ramachandran said that she had a vision to become a Cardio Transplant surgeon for which she is working hard to achieve her goal. “I am putting in lots of hard work with dedication and determination to make my dream a reality”, she said in confidence.
