On the occasion of the World Cancer Day today, the Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research (SRIOR) has launched a first-of-its-kind toll-free number for all common cancers, a one-stop helpline in English and Tamil.

On the sidelines of the launch function, SRIOR Director and Oncologist, Dr Guhan told reporters that the number, 1800 2706 626, when dialed, gives you the option to get information in either English or Tamil.

Once the language is chosen, dialling numbers from 1 to 9 helps you know about blood cancer, brain cancer, cervix cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, head and neck cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, and prostate cancer.

Under each cancer, numbers 1 to 7 give you details on, respectively, what the specific cancer is, the stages, the risk factors, the symptoms, screening and diagnosis, treatment options, and preventive measures. No.8 repeats the menu and No.9 takes you back to the main menu, he said.

The details are available in an easy-to-understand manner, and contains information on common cancers, like symptoms, diagnostic tests, treatment methods, side effects and methods to overcome them, Gujan said.

The toll-free line was launched by Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital dean, Edwin Joe. The Managing Director of Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, R. Vijayakumar inaugurated a free screening for cancer of the esophagus and the stomach for new and treated patients.
