Coimbatore : It took 15 long years for 116 retired workers of various tea estates in Valparai in the district to get their gratuity.

Cheques to the tune of Rs 54.36 lakh were handed over by Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani to the workers, who retired or took voluntary retirement, at a function here today.

Velumani said considering the plight of the workers special efforts were taken and negotiations with the estate managements proved successful recently.

A total 230 workers were identified and in the first phase 116 were given the cheques. As many as 15,768 workers were there in the 61 registered and six unregistered tea estates, Velumani said.

It was for the economic and social uplift of the workers that the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa made upward revision of the wages in 2013-16 and 2016-18, making them now receive Rs 309 as minimum wages daily, he said.
AIADMK legislators and MPs were present at the function along with senior district officials.
