Coimbatore can be called the Rome of Kongunad, for various reasons. This region was ruled by a number of dynasties – Raddy, Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas, Gangas, Pallavas, Ganga Pallavas, Nulamba Pallavas, Banas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Kongu Cheras, Kongu Cholas, Kongu Pandyas, Hoysalas, rulers of Vijayanagar, Ummathoorars, Nayaks of Madurai, Mysore Wodeyars and finally by Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan.

The East India Company brought down Tipu’s empire in the year 1799 and later Coimbatore became part of the Madras presidency and governed from Salem.

On November 24, 1804, Coimbatore was made the district headquarters. It stretched form Palakkad to Kollegal with 10 taluk falling under its control. Later Nilgiris district was carved out in 1868. During the reorganization of states, the Malayalam and Kannada speaking parts of the district became part of another state.

Merchants from Rome, Egypt and Greece, who crossed Coimbatore to reach the other coast, bought agricultural implements, cornelian jewellery, cotton textiles and spices with their gold and silver coins. Even today we can find such coins in archives and historians have presented detailed account of all this in their research findings.

Today Coimbatore is the epicentre of growth in Tamil Nadu. And this is from the day it was declared district headquarters.

The people of Coimbatore have been celebrating the historic day as Coimbatore Day. Exhibitions and cultural events have been part of celebrations. Siruthuli was among the first to celebrate this day by conducting Coimbatore quiz.

The founder-trustee of PSG Institutions late Naren Rajan has been supporters of these celebrations.

Eminent scholars and academicians including Harish Damodaran, Vanitha Mohan, Dr. Nanditha Krishna and Randor Guy have been part of the celebrations.
