Government approves Rs 2,919 crore to the Nirbhaya fund in order to create 8 safe cities for women

In order to develop eight safe cities for women, the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development approved projects worth Rs 2,919 crore under the Nirbhaya fund. The proposed cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Lucknow.

FACTS ABOUT THE PROJECTS UNDER NIRBHAYA FUND

1.The special focus of the project will be on the safety of women in public spaces

2.The plan for the safe cities is prepared in coordination with police commissioners and municipal corporations of each city

3.The project also focuses on quick response systems to combat the crime rate

MEASURES TO BE TAKEN UNDER THE PROJECT

1.Enhanced safety at public places like roads, schools, metro stations etc.

2.Use of latest technology such as:

  i.video monitoring

 ii.person tracking system

 iii.facial recognition system

 iv.onboard video feed sharing to the police fleet

  v.GIS mapping of the criminal hotspots

3.Setting up of dedicated women safety patrol vans equipped with GPS

4.Helpdesk service for women

5.Dedicated vans for women in distress

All of these initiatives are more or less the same in these eight cities with minor changes.

NIRBHAYA FUND

Created by the Ministry of Finance in 2013, Nirbhaya fund is dedicated to the implementation of initiatives aimed at strengthening the safety and security of women in the country. It is a non-lapsable corpus fund, monitored by Empowered Committee of Officers under Secretary of Women and Child Development Ministry.
