Dr. Rajesh Shankar Iyer, Neurologist and Epileptologist, PSG Hospitals, gives an insight into the causes and consequences of epilepsy. Around 10 % to 15% of the epileptic patients, who don’t respond to drugs are evaluated for surgery. These few may undergo surgeries such as temporal lobectomy,removal of one part of the brain; hemispherectomy, removal or disabling of cerebral hemisphere; and callosotomy where the bridge between the brain is separated , esp for children who are prone to frequent falls.
