All India Institute of Medical Science Hospital ,an autonomous entity under Central Health ministry has been functioning in Delhi providing cost effective treatment to the public at nominal rates. All medical conditions ranging from AIDS to cancer are treated here. The former CM of Tamilnadu, Jayalalitha made a request to the Central government that an AIIMS hospital be set up in TN also to benefit the people here. After much research and deliberations , a site spreading over 200 acres in Thoppur near Madurai has been selected for the hospital. It is estimated that around 3 crore people would benefit from this hospital.
