World Heritage Day celebrated at NMR museum

COIMBATORE: World Heritage Day was celebrated by Salem Division at Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) Museum in Mettupalayam in the district, which is the starting point of the UNESCO approved Heritage NMR.

April 18 is being celebrated as the ‘World Heritage Day’ as approved by UNESCO since 1982, with an aim to enhance awareness of the importance of cultural heritage of humankind and increase the efforts to protect and conserve the same.

Since the current year’s theme was ‘Heritage for Generations’, children and senior citizens in and around Mettupalayam area were invited to the museum and were shown around the artifacts therein.

Short videos and slides on the NMR and its heritage value were put on display during the visit.

The elders were also encouraged to interact with about 100 school children, from the nearby Holy Angel Matriculation School, along with teachers and non-teaching staff. and discuss with them the value and importance of Heritage.

P. Satheesh Saravanan, Station Director and Deeksha Choudry, Assistant Divisional Mechanical Engineer both from Coimbatore, represented the division.
