Traders seek removal of 1pc cess on waste cotton
April 20, 2018
Coimbatore : Waste cotton traders in the State today sought the Government to remove the one per cent cess levied on it, terming it as agriculture produce.
The textile mills are already paying one per cent cess while purchasing cotton and again one per cent cess was levied on cotton waste from mills, resulting in double tax on the same produce, Waste Cotton Traders Association convenor Senthil told media persons here. The Government was levying the cess only in this region and Madurai, leaving coastal belts like Kanyakumari and Chennai, Senthil said adding that waste cotton after being brought under GST was exempted from agricultural produce.

The Government should immediately rectify the anomaly and stop levying the agricultural produce cess on waste cotton, being levied through market committee, he said.
As a first step, traders will meet Minister, S P Velumani and former Agriculture Minister Doraikannu and then present a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Senthil said.
