Coimbatore: ‘The Nurture Nature Camp’ organized by Siruthuli entered into its fifth and final day with the agenda of ‘Waste Management’ (Knowing more about Black Gold and Activity for Kids’ to Grab and Drop).

Kids started off the day in an energetic manner by assembling on time at Pachainayaki – VOC where they were welcomed by Managing Trustee of Siruthuli Vanitha Mohan and Chairman of NNC Uma K. Rao. The day started with Chitra Krishnaswamy giving a detailed note on ‘instant’ usage of Kambhas/ Home composting pots, which reduces our Kitchen waste approximately from 100 kgs to 20 kgs.

This was followed by an exciting visit to VM FARM- Periyanaickenpalayam where they were given buttermilk and salt biscuits on arrival.

Here the campers spent time sharing their knowledge with Vanitha Mohan. Children were introduced to interesting experiences in visiting turmeric cultivation land, Vermicomposting, and Panchakaviya preparation techniques. The kids truly enjoyed taking a look at country cow and expressed super surprises on being told about the three amla trees that were transplanted to retain its survival.

The most important thing learnt on final day saw the children learn usage of kitchen waste both with Kambhas and bed preparation with Earthworms. They were also allowed to handle waste in an effective way and were reiterated to develop a habit of segregating waste at their homes as well. The kids learnt a lot about waste handling also from Prashanth of No Dump NGO. It was an interesting experience for the children wearing masks and gloves to set right for a different ‘operation’. The tender coconuts and rain showers bid a good bye to the campers.
