Coimbatore : With two more persons succumbing to injuries, the death toll in the accident, where State-owned bus fell into a 500-foot deep gorge yesterday near Manthada in Nilgiris district, rose to nine today.

The bus carrying 34 passengers was proceeding to Coonoor from Udhagamandalam and fell into the gorge when the driver attempted to avoid a pit. Six persons died on the spot. Of the 17 injured referred to the Government Hospital here, a woman died last evening, while a man succumbed to injuries around midnight, police said today.

Bus conductor Prakash, who was brought in a critical condition, died this morning, raising the toll to nine.The deceased were identified as Shantha Kumari, Prabhakaran, Dharman, Dinesh, Nandakumar, all in and around Udhgamandalam, while Jayashree was from Bengaluru. Those who died at the Government Hospital here yesterday were Almas and Murthy, from Udhagamandalam.
