The living room is that space in the house where one spends most of their time. This holds true for the guests as well, making it a tricky space to set up, especially with the increasingly smaller sizes of homes. Gone are the heavy, bulky furniture of the yore. Trending currently is those pieces of furniture which do not take up a lot of space while also managing to add extra seating. The trick lies in creating an illusion of extra space. The right furniture layout can add some valuable real estate within the home itself, which can then be used for other purposes as well.

Here are some ways you can maximize space in your home:

•Choose visually lightweight furniture pieces: By visually lightweight furniture we refer to such pieces of furniture which not only are lightweight but also look lightweight. Examples of visually lightweight décor pieces can include light or neutral colored furniture. These colors usually mix well the color of the wall, thereby consuming very little visual space. Another option is to use ‘invisible” materials such as acrylic, Lucite and glass with “waterfall edges”, which take zero visual space.

•Using light: When combined with the right wall colors, the available light, especially sunlight can be used to enlarge spaces by creating an illusion of extra space. This can also be done by keeping the window treatments simple and not blocking the window with heavy fabric. The other alternative which can be used with the previous option is to use white colored or pale flooring, walls, and upholstery.

•Add window and small scale furniture: Slender, leggy pieces of furniture can be placed in front of windows. The design of the furniture and the light passing through the furniture fools the eye into thinking that space is larger than what it actually is because one can see under and through the furniture. Another option is to add shelves in the area between wall studs or making shelves in the wall itself. Antique shops are the best places to look for small-scale furniture, since the average room size until the previous century was usually quite small.

•Use multifunctional furniture: In small spaces, every piece of furniture should live up to its purpose and function. Living room furniture for small spaces such as sofas can also double up as a couch. One can also use an ottoman as a coffee table or as an extra seating option. The single biggest advantage of multifunctional furniture is the versatility and the flexibility it brings along.

With estate prices and the falling apartment sizes, the need of the hour is compact furniture which can fit into any space. This should not be an issue, with the number of online furniture sites which have come up in the past four years. However, offline brick and mortar stores are not out of contention yet, and one can easily look for them by searching “ Furniture shops near me” on the web.
