Plea to make ‘Namma Toilet’ functional in Mettupalayam

‘Namma Toilet’, one of the flagship programmes of the State Government, has been implemented in a few cities. Following good response, it was extended to various other places. However, it has encountered problems in that the toilets have not been installed for use.

Mettupalayam is a classic case. ‘Namma Toilet’ was formally launched in three areas, namely, Mahadevapuram, L.S. Puram and Mattakkaratheru. However, the toilets have not been commissioned for use.

Mahadevapuram has two for women, and one for the physically challenged. L.S. Puram has two for women, two for men, and one for physically challenged. Mattakkaratheruvu too has the same number.

Though all are there, none can be used by the public, as they have not been installed fully. People, including women labourers, continue to answer nature’s call in public and open areas.

A. Ismail, an auto driver, says “this project covers main areas of Mettupalayam and would greatly benefit public if made fully operational. It will be of great use to women, labourers, and school students. But the scheme is going a waste without completion, and this is a loss not only to the exchequer, but also the health of people”.

Ward Councillor H. Thirabanu says that the money from the Government did not reach the contractor, so the work was not progressing.

Municipality Chairman Sathish Kumar says that the contractor did not complete the project. “The same person has undertaken the contract for the whole State. He was not able to get the required material for all the places. Now we have decided to purchase materials and get the toilets ready in 20 days”.
