Vehicular traffic, both road and rail, was disrupted, following land slide at various places in the Nilgiris district, following incessant rains that since last evening.

The Nilgiris Mountain Rail, which departed from Mettupalayam around 7.10 a.m. was stopped at Kallar Railway Station, due to land slide on the track between Aderley and Hillgrove railway stations.

Some workers from Railway Department, Coonoor, were called to clear the debris. However, due to falling of trees and land slide near Barliar, they were not able to reach the spot, resulting in further delay of the movement of the train, railway sources said.

Finally, some workers from Mettupalayam were sent to clear the debris. Another landslide was reported some distance away and train services were cancelled. So the train returned to Mettupalayam, they said.

Two trips of Ooty-Coonoor train were cancelled following land slide at Aruvangadu, the sources said.

Meanwhile, the District Administration declared holiday for educational institutions, as rains continued to lash across the Nilgiris district.

According to police, rain water entered many houses in and around Udhagamandalam, as garbage blocked the drains.
