Collector issues flood alert in Mettupalayam

Rains from the Ghat region have almost filled the Pillur Dam near Mettupalayam forcing the District Administration to evacuate people from low lying areas here on Friday.

The Pillur reservoir has been receiving large amount of rain water for the past few days because of the heavy rains in the Nilgris district.

According to sources, the 100 feet dam is already filled upto 94 feet forcing to officials to let out 6000 cusecs of water.

“If the level reaches 97 feet, we would be letting out 12000 cusecs of water,” said an official.

As a result, Coimbatore District Collector Archana Patnaik has advised people from Mettupalayam, Sirumugai, Nellithurai and Thekkampatti to move to higher grounds as it may flood during let out of excess water.

The movement of trains on the Mettupalayam to Ooty railway line has been suspended on Saturday because of landslides on tracks.
