Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham on Thursday held its 28th convocation at the Coimbatore campus, conferring degrees on graduating students in the presence of dignitaries, faculty and families. A total of 4,990 undergraduates, 1,482 postgraduates and 135 Ph.D. scholars received their degrees.
The ceremony began with an academic procession, a welcome dance and the traditional lighting of the lamp with Amma’s Dhyana Shloka.Chancellor Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma) addressed the gathering through a video message. Swami Ramakrishnananda Puri, Treasurer of the Mata Amritanandamayi Math delivered the benedictory address, while Dr.Maneesha Vinodini Ramesh, Provost, presented the annual report of the university.
In his convocation address, Honourable Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Justice (Independent Charge), and Honourable Minister of State, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, said,
“We are living in the era of Industry 4.0 — artificial intelligence, robotics, 3D printing, the Internet of Things and blockchain. You have received a degree, which makes you capable of serving society. You may be a PhD holder or an MSc, but moral values and character are most important. As Swami Vivekananda once told in a speech, ‘In your country, a tailor makes a gentleman; in our country, character makes a gentleman.’”
Justice K.R. Shriram, Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court and Guest of Honour, noted,
“Today, the world does not merely need skilled professionals. It needs individuals of unwavering morals and character.”
The event also saw the award of Ph.D. degrees and university medals to meritorious students. Vice Chancellor Dr.P.Venkat Rangan presented a vision statement, and the compendium Graduation Day 2025: Glimpses of Joy, Pride & Inspiration was released.
Graduates wore Amrita’s traditional convocation attire, first introduced by the university in the early 1990s as a way to celebrate India’s cultural heritage.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sasangan Ramanathan, Dean-Engineering, followed by the national anthem and a group photograph.
