Niharika’s brush with art fetches her national honour

“Catch them young” is the buzzword for acclaimed artists V. Jeevananthan and V. Chandrasekar of Chitrakala Academy in the city, who are doing yeomen service in honing the skills of children who are keen on learning art.
One such young wonder is V. Niharika who has brought accolades to her family and school by excelling in art. Eleven-year old Niharika, a class six student of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, said that she couldn’t forget the memorable moment when she won the top slot at the national level art competition held under the aegis of World Congress Agroforestry, New Delhi, last year.
The budding artist at Chitrakala Academy said that it was her masters Jeevananthan and Chandrasekar, who taught her the nuances of ‘art’ after they identified her innate talent and gave useful tips on painting to take part at national events.
Niharika said that her entry in the national competition brought her name and fame since she bagged the first prize under 6-12 age category.
Her mother V. Bhargavi, a home-maker said she received the national award from President of India Pranab Mukherjee during the meet organised by World Congress on Agroforestry on February 10 in New Delhi this year.
Bhargavi pointed out that Niharika was interested in learning art right from the age of 5 under the tutelage of Jeeva and Chandrasekar at Chitrakala Academy. Niharika’s father S. Varadarajan, Division Sales Manager at Ajantha Pharmaceuticals also encouraged.
The young artist has other awards to her credit – winning the drawing competition held by Times of India on ‘Child Labour’ in 2011 which was organised in Coimbatore, Trichy, Salem and Erode.
Niharika also bagged the first prize in the art competition conducted by Power Grid Corporation of India where she was selected for the national event from among 3.75 lakh students who took part from across the country. She won a consolation prize in 2013.
She won another consolation prize at a national level competition conducted by Union Ministry of Information and Technology, Government of India, last year.
