A group of people, under the guidance of NGOs, are cleaning the elephant corridor in Mankarai area on the outskirts of Coimbatore, which is full of empty liquor bottle pieces.

A herd of wild elephants used to migrate to the village Mankarai and nearby areas in Western Ghats, in search of fodder and water, almost every day. The villagers noticed bleeding injuries on the legs of most of the elephants. The injuries were caused due to broken glass pieces from the liquor bottles thrown on the pathway – corridor – by the people, who were buying and consuming alcohol from the nearby TASMAC outlet, police said.

About 80 volunteers, organised by the NGOs, with the help of the villagers have already removed more than 1,000 bottles and cleaned up the area to protect the elephants, they said.

The villagers demanded the district administration to take action against the shop and the public who throw the empty bottles in the elephant corridor, police said.
