Unable to voice his pleas at the emergency meeting held at the Corporation Council on Monday, DMK MLA from the Singnallur constituency walked out the council meeting.

N. Karthik stood up to speak about the issues relating to scarcity of drinking water and lack of basic facilities in his constituency. However, he was immediately stopped by the council members, claiming that issues apart from the minutes, should not be discussed at an emergency meeting.

The AIADMK council members further alleged that a non-member of the council should not be allowed to speak during such meetings.

Karthik, who was forced to walk out after the tussle, told media persons outside that all the council meetings and the assembly sessions had turned into Jayalalithaa adulation ceremonies. “They asked me not to speak outside the minutes. But they passed resolutions thanking the CM, which was well outside the minutes,” he complained.

He further said that Mayor P. Rajkumar was not allowing civic issues to be discussed in the meeting, claiming that most of the sessions were emergency meetings that did not allow discussions.

Ironically, the issue was also taken up by some of the AIADMK councillors, as they too said that important issues were not discussed at the meetings. The Mayor pacified them by promising that another meeting would be arranged soon to discuss the issues left out in the minutes of the meeting.

Various issues including renting rations shops, and constructing shelters at ration shops for the public were discussed at the meeting.
