Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today said though the Supreme Court order was hard to follow, Karnataka would follow it and release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

“Karnataka has been been facing injustice in the Cauvery issue for a long time. Yet, we have to deal with the situation arising out of it. We have agreed to follow the court ruling and implement what judiciary has directed,” he told reporters after presiding over a Cabinet meeting.

Condemning the violence in various parts of Karnataka over the issue, Siddaramaiah sought the media’s cooperation in restoring normality. “Bengaluru is not just a capital of Karnataka, but an international city as well. Please join hands with the Government in solving the issue,” he said.

He announced a compensation of Rs. 10 lakhs each to the victims of Monday’s violence.

The Chief Minister said that he had written to the Prime Minister to intervene in the matter and has sought an appointment at the earliest. “Most probably I will meet him tomorrow,” Siddaramaiah added.

The Supreme Court on Monday had modified its earlier order directing Karnataka to release 15000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu and directed the State to release 12000 cusecs of water for farmers. However, the revised order did not make any difference as large scale violence and protests erupted across the State.

Videos showing innocent Tamils beaten up and more than 45 omni buses torched went viral sparking condemnation from all over the country.

The incident backfired lightly in Tamil Nadu as few outfits attempted to besiege the establishments run by Kannadigas all over the State. Protests broke out in Chennai, Coimbatore, Rameswaram and other parts.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a truce between the two States and have asked the people to remain calm and maintain peace.
