7-year old undergoes life saving twin procedure

A city hospital today claimed to have successfully performed a life saving procedure on a 7-year old girl with twin congenital heart disease.

The girl, who was diagnosed with twin congenital heart disease, having block in aortic valve – Aortic stenosis and a connection between her two blood vessels – Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) from the age of one.

Life became difficult for her for past six months as her block in aortic valve worsened and became severe. She was having breathing difficulty while walking and two episodes of fainting attacks for past two weeks and was brought to Sri Ramakrishna Hospital here for evaluation.

After carrying detailed evaluation, Dr. S. Devaprasath, Paediatric Cardiologist, found her aortic valve, which controls the blood supply to all vital organs in the body, blocked almost totally, which was due birth defect of the valve – bicuspid aortic valve. In addition the baby had another birth defect PDA.

Interventional cardiac catheterization was carried out to close holes, unblock valves without surgery, using a key-hole approach, which has the advantage of minimally invasive, less pain, quicker recovery (usually overnight stay in hospital) and no scar, on September 10, coupled with Balloon Aortic Valvotomy, for widening he blocked aortic valve using a balloon catheter inside the valve.

PDA was closed using a button device, which was introduced from the leg and inserted (without open surgery) across the PDA to close it and total procedure was completed within one and half hours.

Since the parents of patient could not not afford the expenses, Rotary Club of Sai City came forward and took care of finances.
