Tomorrow’s bandh called by the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association has gained support and momentum throughout the State with more organisations and political parties extending their support.

Serpentine queues were seen in almost every petrol pump in the City. A statement from the Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association said nearly 4,600 pumps would remain closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow.

With the Federation of Tamil Nadu Traders Association taking part in the bandh, more than 22 lakh shops would also remain closed. The Federation president, A.M. Vikramaraja, told reporters here that 11 lakh goods carrying lorries and 55,000 sand laden lorries would not ply. “Lorry and bus operators suffered losses running into crores during the violence in Karnataka. Commercial establishments were attacked and buses burnt,” he said. Omni buses and autos too would stay off roads.

Private schools declare holiday

The Private Nursery, Primary and Matriculation Schools Association has declared a holiday. According to Nandakumar, the association president, around 18,000 member schools across the State would remain closed and the exams scheduled tomorrow has been postponed to Saturday.

Around 20,000 workers at the Koyambedu wholesale market would stay off work. As many as 400 trucks carrying vegetables and fruits from neighbouring States have been advised not to bring supply to the market, that has around 4,300 shops. Around 1.5 lakh milk distributors in the State have decided to shut operations between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

According to sources, a meeting of senior police officials would be held to review the security and steps to prevent any untoward incident during the bandh, that also has the support of the DMK, DMDK, VCK, MDMK, Congress and the Left parties.
