Multiple organs, including the heart, eyes, liver and kidneys, were harvested from a brain dead student and transplanted to different patients here on Thursday.

According to sources, the deceased, K Nirmal Kumar, 17, was studying at a private college here. He was admitted at the Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH) after he met with an accident near Erode on September 27. However, he was declared brain dead by the doctors on October 7.

After approval from his family, a team of doctors conducted the surgery to harvest his vital organs, which will give a new lease of life to six patients.

While the liver and both the kidneys were used for transplantation at the KMCH, the eyes were sent to a private hospital in Coimbatore, and the heart to a private hospital in Chennai.
