Chennai: From Friday morning, theatres will open once again for the audience that was starved of staple entertainment as theatre owners went on a strike against steep municipal tax imposed over and above the 28 per cent GST.

On Thursday, the film theatre owners association announced withdrawal of the strike after the government announced that it will form a committee including members of the film fraternity to discuss and take a final decision on the 30 per cent municipal tax.

Following this assurance, the film theatre owners decided to withdraw the strike that entered the fourth day on Thursday.

“From tomorrow, theatres will be open as we have withdrawn the strike,” said Abhirami Ramanathan, president of Tamil Nadu Film Chamber of Commerce.

Tamil Nadu theatres’ owners and distributors went on a strike demanding repeal of the 30 per cent tax as it would have crippled the theatre owners and also hit the film industry badly.

Now the ticket that was priced at Rs 120 will become Rs 153, the ticket of Rs 110 will become Rs 130 and the ticket that was priced at Rs 100 will become Rs 118.

The film theatre owners also got support for the stir from the two superstars – Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, film producers council, film stars, opposition DMK and Congress.

The Tamil Nadu government assurance to delegation of film fraternity came after a series of meetings between the two. Association members had also met Finance Minister D Jayakumar and chief minister Edapaddi Palanisami, who assured them that the government was with them and the matter required a decision at the policy level.
