Thanjavur: At least 120 activists from the DMK, including seven women, were arrested when they resorted to a road blockade near the old bus stand here today protesting the ‘detention’ of their party treasurer MK Stalin in Chennai.

As announced by the party high command, DMK activists led by the party’s south district secretary and Thiruvaiyaru MLA Durai Chandrasekaran staged a demonstration in front of the head post office here and raised slogans condemning the BJP led Central government for demonetisation of currencies which has caused people distress. Among others, former union minister of state for finance S S Palanimanickam, the party’s urban district secretary T K G Neelamegam and Dr Anjugam Boopathy, who unsuccessfully contested from Thanjavur constituency recently, took part in the protests.

Meanwhile, a large number of DMK activists led by the party treasurer MK Stalin were detained for holding a similar protest in front of the Indian Bank on Rajaji Salai in Chennai without police permission.

As the information reached Thanjavur, irate DMK activists led by Durai Chandrasekaran gathered in front of the old bus stand, squatted on the road and blocked the traffic condemning Stalin’s detention. Subsequently, police arrested at least 120 activists of DMK in this connection.
