“Amrita Agriculture Students Emphasize Nutrition, Apiary and Landrace Importance for Farmers”

Coimbatore- Amrita School of Agricultural Sciences final-year students, engaged in the Rural Agricultural Work Experience Program in Vadasithur, introduced farmers to vital topics such as nutrition, apiary, and the significance of landraces. The educational session covered major nutrition disorders, addressing issues like obesity and undernutrition, including marasmus and kwashiorkor. The students also demonstrated beekeeping techniques, showcasing the benefits of placing bee boxes in coconut fields to enhance yield and how to extract honey from the hives. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of preserving landraces for future use, highlighting their high yield, resistance to pests and diseases, and drought tolerance. Furthermore, the students introduced farmers to the Uzhavan App, providing services like farmer producer company details, pest and disease monitoring with recommendations, information on various schemes, and e-marketing. Lastly, practical guidance was offered on the proper handling and storage of agrochemicals. The program, conducted under the guidance of Dr. Sudheesh Manalil, the College Dean and with the assistance of group facilitators Dr. Priya R, Dr. S Parthasarathy, and Dr. VR Mageshen aimed to raise awareness and empower local farmers. Students who actively participated in the event were Keerthana, Navya, Sai Shreya, Aardra, Sivani, Aiswarya, Devika, Gopika, Kaaviya, Sai Shobana, Sonish, Prithviraj, Adithyan, Nithin and Sudheendra.
