Bid to place footwear on Collector’s head: Man held

COIMBATORE: Tension prevailed at the Salem district collectorate on Monday when a man tried to place a footwear on the head of senior officials, including District Collector Rohini Ramadas.

As Rohini and other officials were receiving petitions from the public as part of the weekly grievances day, suddenly Arumugham (57) jumped the queue and went near the Collector, removed is footwear and tried to place it on her head. Rohini, who saw the man removing his footwear moved sidewards.

Arumugham then tried to do the same to the District Revenue Officer, R Sukumaran, who pushed him down. Other officials, who were present there, moved him away and handed over him to the police.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that Arumugham of Kachanachampatti in Rasipuram, is a self-proclaimed ‘Chappal Siddhar’ and keeping chappal on the head was part of his blessings, police said. He had once attempted to place his footwear on the head of Namakkal Collector.
