Doctors at the GKNM Hospital here successfully performed a trans aortic valve implantation on an 81-year-old woman.
“The patient, with hypertension, diabetes, weaker legs and asthmatic, was brought to us a few days ago. Detailed investigation reveled that her arotic valve had narrowed down considerably,” Dr. Rajpal K. Abhaichand, interventional cardiologist said. She had already undergone bypass surgery 12 years ago.
“We decided to replace the valve through a 2 mm hole in the nerve in her leg without any surgical procedure. The artificial valve was mounted on a small tube through the femoral artery and the valve was placed across the aortic valve,” he said. The patient stayed in the ICCU for a few hours before being shifted to the ward.
“This procedure is a gift to elderly people, especially with complications,” he remarked.
