The Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) will be made fully air conditioned soon and work for this will begin next month under the JICA project, according to its Resident Medical Officer Dr. R. Soundravel.

Talking to Covai Post, Dr. Soundravel said the hospital has been sanctioned Rs.10 crores for constructing a separate trauma and emergency and burns block.

The hospital has successfully performed cochlear implant surgery for more than 175 individuals in 2017. This is the highest number performed by any government hospital in the State, he said. The first surgery was performed in 2013 in the hospital.

“The standard of the surgery, covered under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Insurance Scheme, has improved and done under the guidance of standards recommended by the Medical Council of India,” he added.

“The quality of treatment offered at Government Hospitals has improved. Unfortunately people are avoiding Government Hospitals thinking that they will not get proper medical care,” Dr. Soundravel said. The hospital has two scan machines. “Every day more than 25 patients come for MRI scan and 100 for CT scan. Even private hospitals do not take more than 10 scans,” he said and added that most of the renal transplants, cardio and orthopaedic surgeries performed in the hospital has been successful.

The hospital has so far performed 8,500 safe deliveries. “New born babies get special attention in the neo-natal unit. The hospital maintains a milk bank, where mothers milk is being stored hygienically.” The hospital also offers master health check up for Rs. 250, he said.
